Hurricane Katrina

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made a landfall on the Gulf Coast. It was a category 3 when it landed; it had winds of 100-140 miles per hour, and the storm was destructive. To make it even worse, it was raining heavily before the storm hit the gulf. Next, the storm surge was as high as 9 meters, and that made water seep under the soil of some levees and swept some away too. Later, about 80% of New Orleans was under some water.

But, the worst part of the storm was the aftermath. There was a lot of flooding in a result of levee destruction. Even though the destruction was immense, The Coast Guard rescued about 34,000 people in just New Orleans. Also local citizens helped by using their boats and offering food and shelter. In the other hand, the government went prepared for the storm. Many government officials were unaware of how bad it was in New Orleans. I wasn't living in Louisiana at the time, but my parents said they remembered Katrina and seeing it on the news.
