Symbolism: The Girl and the Fish

She was in a hospital room. She got into a horrible car accident. The fishtank beside her hospital bed gleamed as the light through the window bounced off of the glass. The blue fish was staring back at her. The fish was energetic; like a child with an ice cream, the fish swam around the enclosed tank with much energy and made many fast twists and turns. The girl was starting physical therapy; her family and friends were supporting her. She was getting better, but then her friends stopped seeing her as often. The fish was less energetic. Her family was distressed from the long and restless nights at the hospital. The fish swam slower. The doctor realized she was going to be paralyzed. The fish stopped swimming. The girl cried everyday. The fish seemed extremely lonely. The girl was in a deep dark hole. The fish was showing signs of death.

One day, her mom made the girl's favorite soup. The nurse added another fish to the tank. Her friend occasionally came by to see how the girl was doing. The fish was eating again. The girl wanted to get better no matter what. The fish gained energy. The girl was making the most of her physical therapy, and she was adjusting to the life in a wheelchair. The fish is swimming and playing with his friend. The girl is out of the hospital and is living a stress free life. The fish is back to his old self.

Symbol: I used the blue fish as a symbol for the girl's health-- both physical and emotional. Whenever something changed in her life, the fish would do something similar to her and represent what she is feeling.

  1. I love how you used the fish as a symbol. You used descriptive adjectives too like energetic and distressed. I also just like this little story.
