Song Analysis

The song I chose to analyze was "Umbrella' By Rihanna feat. Jay-Z. This song has many major techniques being used that we have studied in class.

"When the world has dealt its cards"

In the song "Umbrella", the artist uses personification to enhance the meaning of the lyrics in that the reader can understand the point of view of the artist. This is an example of personification. The world is being personified as dealing cards, which means (in context) that the world has set its path for us, but we will get together in the end. This is a very nice technique to use because it is an eye-catching, or ear-catching in this case, way to incorporate a technique into a rap song like this.

"You know me, in anticipation for precipitationStack chips for the rainy dayJay, Rain Man is back with Little Miss SunshineRihanna, where you at?"

This passage int he song can be identified as assonance. In the lyrics above I highlighted the short "i" sound so you can see the use of it in the lyrics. This is a good way to make the passage come together as a whole as the sound can make one think that.

"Good Girl Gone Bad"

This is an alliteration. The repetition of the "g" can be used to put emphasis on the "bad" part of the lyric.
