Mint Snowball

My favorite narrative we have read in class is Mint Snowball by Naomi Shihab Nye. This narrative is about her great grandpa's mint snowball, how he makes it, how her family loses the recipe, and how this loss relates to her life. She uses so many techniques to make her writing interesting and vivid. One of these techniques is word choice. She uses words like "flamboyant elixir" and "permeated." These words make the story memorable and intriguing. She also uses imagery very well. Whenever she is talking about how her great grandfather makes the snowball, I can almost see it, smell it, and taste it!

Another amazing thing she does in her narrative is organization. It first talks about her great grandfather's drug store, how he makes the mint snowball, how her mom loses the recipe, and how this connects to her life. She puts these events in a logical order so it is easy to follow. Finally, I loved how she ends this narrative; it is about how this past story relates to her current life. She talks about how she feels disjointed or not connected with the modern world, just as the mint snowball recipe was lost. This connection gives insight to her narrative, and its a perfect way to end it.
